‘From Health stems harmony, balance and unity. From disease we suffer discord, chaos and disunity...When there is disunity the human life force signals it’s distress. We see this as pain, anguish, indecision'
(J.R Worsley 1973, founder of The College Of Traditional Acupuncture)
Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions including:
• anxiety, stress and depression
• back pain, sciatica, arthritis, rheumatism
• circulation problems,
• digestive and bowel disorders
• respiratory disorders including asthma
• eczema and skin conditions
• migraine and headaches
• high blood pressure
• general aches and pains
• menstrual problems
As well as seeking help for physical problems, many people come with stress-related disorders and the effects of mental and emotional conflict in their lives. The state of our Mental and Emotional health is considered equally as important as our physical health and an imbalance in any one of those aspects of us can also negatively impact the others.
About Acupuncture
Traditional Acupuncture enables imbalances on any level of our being, either physical, mental or emotional, to heal, as far as nature will allow. In Chinese Medicine any illness or symptom, on any of those levels, is associated with an imbalance of the person’s vital life energy, or Qi (pronounced Chee).
When the body sends out a distress signal in the form of any symptom, it is a sign that there is an imbalance of Qi, which must be rebalanced to restore health.
This principle of Traditional Acupuncture is important because it means the underlying cause of the symptom is being dealt with (as opposed to the symptom alone) and conducted by inserting very fine stainless steel needles into acupuncture points.
Because Traditional Acupuncture affects the whole person – physical, mental or emotional, it can therefore help a very wide range of different health problems, such as those listed above.
With some conditions, acupuncture is often used in conjunction with Western medical treatment that may already be being received.
Research and Credibility
In 2002 The World Health Organisation published a report into conditions which have been PROVEN, through controlled trials, to be effectively treated by acupuncture. View the report here. A further section of the report also lists other conditions where acupuncture has been shown to have a therapeutic effect but for which further proof is needed, pending further research.
Acupuncture has also been recently recommended by the National Institute Of Clinical Excellence to become more readily available on the NHS, and a recent study found that acupuncture was more effective for back pain than conventional medicine. Click here for more information.
It also speaks volumes that acupuncture is commonly practiced in mainstream Chinese hospitals, alongside conventional medicine techniques. (It first gained attention in the western world when United States President Nixon visited China in 1972, and one of the travelling reporters had his appendix removed and received acupuncture for post-operative pain relief. He was so impressed that he wrote about acupuncture upon returning to the United States)
Appreciation of Health
Patients commonly report back that they feel an overall renewed sense of vitality and vigour for life, alongside an improvement in the symptom which prompted the initial visit. This is the beauty and potency of acupuncture, that it affects your whole being, and it's this improvement in your overall sense of wellbeing which is often as important as improvement in the symptom itself.
No-one likes to be in pain or discomfort from a specific complaint, but this is often made much worse by a general sense of discomfort or dissatisfaction in life, or an area of life, which doesn't quite fall into a conventional medicine category. Acupuncture is truly holistic as it encompasses and considers all of those aspects.
A wide variety of people come for treatment, ranging from children to the elderly.
