About Richard Brook
Richard Brook
Lic.Ac, BA (Hons) MBAcC
Member of the British Acupuncture Council
The patient to practitioner relationship is often considered to be an essential part of an acupuncture treatment - enabling the patient to feel at ease and relaxed is often an important step on the way to health.
We're all faced with our own unique challenges through life in terms of our occupation and relationships, but here's some info about me!
I studied my first degree in the field of Food and Consumer Technology and later went on to manage an Organic Food Shop and spend time working in a natural remedies apothecary.
I’m also interested in and have experience of many other complementary and natural medicines and lifestyle choices practicing Yoga, Tai Chi and also a big fan of Gabrielle Roth's 5 Rhythms dance in particular. I like the idea of health maintenance, and try to anchor certain practices and activities into my weekly schedule to help prevent things going wrong in the first place and keep me in good spirits.
I've found Yoga, in particular Dru Yoga a massive help over the years, (i also teach yoga) i see a lot of patients with muscular - skeletal and particularly back problems which i think would have been helped considerably by regular Yoga practice to help combat the effects of modern day work stresses, sedentary work environments, and other lifestyle imbalances. And it's never too late to start! Find a nearby class - give me a call and i can help you - the style i practice is very easy and gentle and suitable for all.
I feel a particular affinity with Taoism, the philosophy of which underpins much of the 5 Elements style of Acupuncture that i practice, the fundamental basics of which are that we are interconnected with the rhythms of the natural world around us - we are part of nature rather than separate from it (sometimes hard to remember when we spend a lot of time in urban environments) and staying in tune with those natural rhythms and cycles helps us stay healthy and balanced. I also feel a connection with Native American traditional ceremonies, the wisdom of which has similar principles, and also have experience around Ayurvedic medicine from some time in India.
During the winter in particular when we naturally drraw inwards, i feel more connected with meditation practices such as Vipassana meditation, and most Winters will attend a retreat.
Alongside my interest in all things Holistic, i feel i've also a good breadth of experience from some of my other life and career experiences, having been a supermarket manager for a while, worked in lots of other retail and service jobs, as well as plenty of experience gained from travelling, particularly in and around North America.
I trained at the College Of Traditional Acupuncture, gaining a licentiate in Acupuncture and a BA (Hons) degree in Traditional Acupuncture from Oxford Brookes University.
I'm also a member of the British Acupuncture Council and abide by their code of ethics and safe practice.
I have current and full Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance, and a valid First Aid certificate.
